Rory McIlroy, Former Sponsor Oakley Reach Settlement

Rory McIlroy, Former Sponsor Oakley Reach Settlement

Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has settled a legal battle with his former sponsor, the Oakley sportswear company, leaving his relationship with his current sponsor Nike intact.

McIlroy switched to Nike in January, and Oakley promptly filed suit, claiming the company had the right to match agreements McIlroy reached with other companies. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“The legal claims brought by Oakley against Rory McIlroy in California have been amicably settled to the satisfaction of both parties,” said a statement released on behalf of McIlroy, Reuters reported. "I am delighted the case is now behind me," McIlroy was quoted as saying.

This isn’t the only court action McIlroy has been facing. He fired his management company, Horizon Sports Management, and was in court in October after Horizon sued him. That case won’t be played out until October 2014, meaning McIlroy will play next season with it hanging over his head.

After a rough 2013 season, McIlroy can’t afford distractions.

"I've seen more lawyers' offices and more lawyers this year than I care to see in my entire life," McIlroy told The Associated Press earlier this month. "It's not something I ever want to go through again, and I'm making sure that I won't go through it again. As a golfer, you want your mind as clear as possible, and it's hard for that to happen when you've got other things that are going on that, firstly, you don't want to happen, and secondly, you don't feel should be happening. It has been a distraction."

McIlroy told the AP that he took advice from Tiger Woods on how to focus on the game, and most of that was learning to say “no.”

"It's something Tiger actually said to me last year. He said you have to remember what got you here in the first place, and you know Tiger, it's 'no' 99 percent of the time for him," McIlroy told the AP.
