Ronnie Spector is reacting to the death of her ex-husband Phil Spector, who passed away on Saturday at age 81. Ronnie has long maintained that Phil was psychologically abusive towards her during their marriage, which lasted from 1968 to 1974, and now she has called him a "lousy husband."
Taking to Facebook, the former Ronettes frontwoman admitted that, although there was "so much to love" about the days she worked with the famed music producer, their relationship was tainted.
"Meeting him and falling in love was like a fairytale. The magical music we were able to make together, was inspired by our love. I loved him madly, and gave my heart and soul to him," she wrote. "As I said many times while he was alive, he was a brilliant producer, but a lousy husband," Ronnie continued. "Unfortunately, Phil was not able to live and function outside of the recording studio. Darkness set in, many lives were damaged."
In a 2018 interview with People, Ronnie revealed that Phil, who was convicted of murder in 2009, had completely isolated her in his Beverly Hills mansion, where he psychologically tormented her for years during their marriage. Her mother eventually helped her to escape.
"We did all this planning for three days. We had everything timed. I had to go out the back door where the cook left and the delivery people brought food in," Ronnie said. The plan was almost foiled when they bumped into Phil upon leaving the mansion but he believed that Ronnie and her mother were just headed out for a walk.
"As soon as we got to a corner where he couldn’t see us, we started running out of there," she said. "That’s how badly I wanted to get out, because I knew I was going to die there."
Despite the alleged abuse, Ronnie said she looked back to the early days fondly.
"I still smile whenever I hear the music we made together, and always will," she concluded in her Facebook post. "The music will be forever."
