A rock dropped from an interstate overpass killed a passenger in a van below and five teen suspects were being charged with second-degree murder, Michigan authorities said.
The death happened on Oct. 18, CNN reported. The six-pound rock was dropped from the overpass and smashed through the windshield of a van travelling on I-75 near Flint. The passenger, 32-year-old Kenneth White, was struck on the head.
In order to pull over, CNN said, the van's driver had to maneuver around four other vehicles that were forced to pull over to avoid rocks strewn on the road.
On Monday, officials confirmed that five teens between the ages of 15 and 17 had been arrested and were to be charged as adults with second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said he didn't believe the act was a deliberate attempt to take somebody’s life.
“It was a willful and wanton act that resulted in somebody’s death,” he said, per KPTV. “These people should have known better. Under Michigan law that is second-degree murder.”
A group of teens reportedly caused damage to several other vehicles that night after throwing a tire and about 20 rocks off two overpasses, CNN noted.
White had a 5-year-old son with his fiancé, Amy Cagle, who battled to make sense of the loss.
"He took away a child's father, and the love of my life," she said, per Click on Detroit, about the teen who dropped the rock. “His stupid act took away a life."
