With Robert Mueller’s grand jury convened more than a year ago, many believe bombshell action by the special counsel is imminent. With the midterms fast approaching, here’s a quick look at what we know about the grand jury.
1. Mueller convened two federal grand juries — in Washington, D.C., and Virginia — around August 2017 to help with the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
2. Grand juries are supposed to be impaneled in secret. However, news broke of Mueller's grand jury in early August 2017.
3. Federal grand juries consist of 16 to 23 individuals who review the evidence put forth by prosecutors, and at least 12 have to approve any indictments. One witness said that there were 20 individuals empaneled by Mueller.
4. Grand jury members have two roles: Be a check on prosecutors, and help with the investigations, especially complex ones like the Russia probe.
Grand juries are also the ideal way to get witnesses to tell the truth. They are under oath and there are no defense attorneys allowed in the proceeding.
5. Mueller's probe has resulted in more than 30 indictments against individuals and companies, including four former officials and associates of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
The bulk of the indictments have been Russians — 13 Russian nationals and companies, as well as 12 intelligence officers.
