Robert Durst, the eccentric real estate heir who has long drawn suspicion related to three murder cases, was arrested Saturday, a day before the HBO documentary on his life revealed a hot mic admission that he "killed them all."
Durst, 71, was arrested Saturday, the day before the final episode of the six-part HBO documentary, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of
Robert Durst,” aired, The New York Times reported.
“What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.” Durst can be heard saying into a microphone in an off-camera moment included in the documentary. That, and other evidence presented in the HBO specials, will likely be used against Durst in court.
His arrest on Saturday was in connection to the 2000 death of his close friend, Susan Berman. Durst has maintained his innocence in the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen Durst, and he was acquitted in the 2001 shooting and dismemberment of a neighbor.
Durst was staying at a New Orleans hotel under a false name
when he was arrested, CNN reported. Authorities believe he was planning to flee the country. He agreed Monday to return to Los Angeles for prosecution.
Durst’s attorney, Chip Lewis, said the incriminating comment he made to himself in the bathroom may not mean anything.
The audio clip was recorded three years ago, and documentary director Andrew Jarecki was shocked when he heard it more
recently in editing, ABC News reported.
"I sat there in the edit room with my partners, and we just sort of shook our heads and it took a while to really understand the impact of it. It was so chilling to hear it. It’s disturbing to hear it. It makes you very uncomfortable to hear it,” he said.
Lewis said his client was set up and suspects the arrest was coordinated between
HBO and authorities, The Associated Press reported.
Jarecki and police denied coordinating on the arrest.
"The HBO series had nothing to do with his arrest,” Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Kirk Albanese told the AP. “We do police work based on the facts and evidence, not based on the HBO series. I know there's lots of speculation about that. It had nothing to do with the show."
