Robert Durst admitted to murdering Susan Berman, according to a testimony given by the alleged killer's longtime friend Thursday.
Nick Chavin testified he met Durst — a real estate heir who is profiled in HBO's "The Jinx" — for dinner in 2014 and afterward the conversation turned to their friend Berman, who was killed in 2000.
“You wanted to talk about Susan?” Chavin asked at the time, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I had to. It was her or me,” Durst reportedly responded. “I had no choice.”
Chavin, who was friends with Berman as well, said he took Durst’s response as a confession into their friend's slaying.
Chavin testified Berman told him years earlier that Durst had killed his wife, Kathleen, who disappeared in 1982. At the time, Chavin asked Berman why she believed that to be true.
“She said: ‘Because he (Durst) told me,’” Chavin said, Reuters reported.
Chavin, who came into court Thursday as a “secret witness,” will take the stand again Friday to be questioned by attorneys representing Durst.
Durst, 73, was taken into custody by police in New Orleans in 2015 and charged with Berman’s murder.
