Former "Saturday Night Live" performer Rob Schneider said in an interview Friday he thinks the current left-leaning politics of the cast and guest stars are ruining the show.
Schneider told the New York Daily News he doesn't find Alec Baldwin’s impersonation of Donald Trump funny because of Baldwin’s obvious bias against the president.
“The fun of ‘Saturday Night Live’ was always you never knew which way they leaned politically,” Schneider told the Daily News. “You kind of assumed they would lean more left and liberal, but now the cat’s out of the bag they are completely against Trump, which I think makes it less interesting because you know the direction the piece is going.”
Schneider was a regular cast member on “SNL” from 1990-1994 alongside Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Adam Sandler.
In comparing Carvey’s impression of George H. W. Bush to Baldwin’s Trump impersonation, Schneider said the former was respectful and empathetic, both qualities he finds lacking in the latter.
“Alec Baldwin is a brilliant actor ... he’s not a comedian,” Schneider told the Daily News, adding that the knowledge of Baldwin’s political leanings ruins any comic surprise of an impression.
Baldwin’s impressions of Trump seem to be helping “SNL” rise from a lengthy slump to the best ratings it has had in 23 years, although an average 11.1 million viewers last season dwindled to a still-respectable 9.4 million this season.
Politically, Schneider was once a Democrat but has become an independent who now criticizes the Hollywood left. His Netflix show “Real Rob” based on his life is currently streaming its second season and will soon film a third.
