Actress Rita Wilson, wife of Tom Hanks, has undergone a double mastectomy to fight breast cancer.
"I have taken a leave from the play ‘Fish in the Dark’ to deal with a personal health issue,"
Wilson said in a statement to People magazine. "Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”
Wilson will return to the Broadway play on May 5.
The 58-year-old actress told People that she has been monitored for a condition called lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) for years and that recent biopsies showed no cancer. But on the advice of a friend and gut instinct, she sought a second opinion, and cancer was confirmed.
"I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right," Wilson said.
LCIS is an area of abnormal cell growth that increases the likelihood of developing cancer.
Wilson has been married to Tom Hanks for 26 years and has appeared in films including “Sleepless in Seattle” and “It’s Complicated,” and played an attorney on the CBS drama “The Good Wife.”
Wilson posted about her health on her Facebook page.
