Ring Around Sun: Florida Residents in Awe of 22-Degree Halo Phenomenon

By    |   Thursday, 17 April 2014 10:24 AM EDT

Florida residents, from Venice to Tampa and Orlando, were treated to rare rainbow halo around the sun on Wednesday, an atmospheric phenomenon called a 22-degree halo.

The 22-degree halo, also known as an icebox and gloriole, is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere that bend direct sunlight, projecting it in the sky at a 22-degree angle and creating what looks like a halo, according to WTVT-TV meteorologist Paul Dellegatto.

Numerous viewers called in to WTVT-TV to describe what they saw throughout the day, and some residents even called 911 to report the strange phenomenon. Despite concerns, Meteorologist Denis Phillips said it is a common natural occurrence and should not raise alarm.

Residents reacted and posted photos of the natural event on Twitter.
