Top Tour de France Contender Richie Porte lost control of his bicycle while riding down the Mont du Chat on Sunday and was seriously injured in a crash.
Porte fractured his pelvis and collarbone in the accident, according to Bleacher Report. He was traveling at speeds above 40 miles per hour when he crashed.
“His condition was stable from the beginning, he was responsive and he remembered everything that happened before and after the crash,” said BMC medical officer Max Testa, according to Bleacher Report. “If everything goes to plan, Richie could be back on the bike at the beginning of August and slowly build his fitness up from there.”
Fellow competitor Dan Martin also was involved in the crash but was not injured and finished the stage in ninth place.
Martin criticized the route, saying it was “slippery under the trees” and that “the route didn’t help with the rain,” The Herald Sun reported.
Porte lost control during a sharp turn in the terrain and slammed into the bitumen at high speed. He was then hit by Martin as he came up from behind.
Porte’s wife had tweeted a few hours earlier asking for positive updates. “Nothing to spark the wifey nerves please!” she said, the Sun reported.
Racers Jesus Herrada, Rafal Majka, Geraint Thomas, and Robert Gesink also crashed at different parts of the mountainous stage 9 course. Thomas broke his collarbone and Robert Gesink abandoned the race after his crash.
Monday is a rest day before cyclists move on to the next stage of the race, which includes a total of 21 stages and will last until July 23.
Fellow cyclists and others shared their thoughts about Porte's crash on Twitter.
