Richard Sherman was reportedly informed by the Seattle Seahawks on Friday that he is being released, and he posted a cryptic tweet.
The tweet showed statistics on Sherman's interceptions, passer rating, and completion percentage that showed he was ranked first in the NFL since 2011, suggesting that he was not slowing down or getting too old for the game.
The tweet seemed to suggest that Sherman didn't agree with his release, Larry Brown Sports suggested. Sherman will soon be 30 and injured his Achilles tendon during the 2017 season. His salary would have been more than $13 million in 2018 and was seen as too much of a burden on the team's salary cap.
ESPN's Josina Anderson tweeted just minutes after Sherman's tweet Friday that Sherman had told him that the Seahawks wanted him to "explore free agency" but hope that he can return to the team if their finances allow it.
Rumors suggested last offseason that Sherman wanted the Seahawks to trade him then, LBS reported. Experts said other teams likely will be interested in Sherman if he remains healthy.
Twitter users pointed out that last year's statistics for Sherman were well below the overall numbers and suggested other teams where he could go.
