A rhinoceros escaped from a wildlife reserve in Nepal and then stampeded through a nearby town, killing a 61-year-old woman while chasing residents and ramming vehicles.
The rhino gored the woman as it created mayhem on the streets of Hetauda in the Makwanpur District,
according to London's Daily Mail.
"It even entered the local hospital, forcing terrified people to jump over the fences," said Ram Prasad Thapaliya.
A police officer confirmed the woman's death and injuries to six other people.
"We have contacted technicians to see if we can sedate the rhino," the police officer told the Daily Mail. "Our focus is to rescue it."
The Independent reported that residents tried to drive the rhino out of the town by beeping horns and beating drums, but the noise seemed to confuse the animal even more, according to officials.
If sedation with tranquilizer guns did not work, they said they would call in specially-trained elephants to help nudge the rhino back to the Parsa Wildlife Reserve.
"We are using elephants and other technical methods to lure the rhino back to its habitat," one town official told The Independent.
Rhinos are most commonly killed in the wild for their horns, which are prized for their alleged medicinal qualities in China and southeast Asia.
Several pictures, including a Vine video of the wild rhino, appeared on social media.
