The first image of Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland in a new biopic currently in production has been released.
Zellweger makes a complete transformation into the screen and music legend for "Judy," the film that will focus on Garland’s performance of what would be her final series of concerts in London in 1968 a year before her death in 1969.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zellweger portrays Garland as exhausted and fragile, missing her children and getting into a new romance with Mickey Dean, who would be her fifth husband. The singer also bemoans her lack of a childhood, which was spent performing in Hollywood prior to her breakout performance as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” which made her name a household word.
The film showcases many of Garland’s most famous songs, including “Over the Rainbow,” THR reported. It is directed by Rupert Goold (“King Charles III”); “The Crown”’s Tom Edge wrote the script.
Rufus Sewell (“The Man in the High Castle”) plays Garland’s ex-husband, Sidney Luft. Finn Wittrock plays Mickey Dean. There is no release date yet for the film.
An earlier memoir by Luft, “Judy and I: My Life With Judy Garland,” detailed that Garland constantly dieted and took Benzedrine to try to stay slim for the cameras because of pressure by her handlers. Luft wrote about Garland’s death, “She was totally burned out. Destroyed. I couldn’t save her,” People reported.
Twitter reactions to the Zellweger as Garland were mixed.
