Colorado Republicans are incensed about the approval Monday of Democratic redrawn legislative maps that could make it extremely difficult for the GOP to maintain the razor-thin majority they now hold in the state House.
According to the
Denver Post, the Colorado Supreme Court turned aside a challenge from Republican lawmakers to toss out the maps, which will force a number of GOP incumbents to either face off in the same district next year or bow out to avoid a party fight.
Republicans regained control of the state House in 2010 by a 33-32 margin, but Democrats believe they now have a chance to pick up enough seats to shift the majority back to them.
“The main goal for us is to pick up one seat,” House Minority Leader Mark Ferrandino told the Post. “I think this give us that opportunity to pick up one seat and possibly more.”
House Majority Leader Amy Stephens predicted that the GOP’s anger over the maps is not likely to make for a particularly easy legislative session next year.
“I think this might be the session you wouldn’t wish on your friends or your enemies,” she told the Post. “It’s going to be tough.”
