Apple announced the release of a red iPhone 7 and 7 plus on Tuesday as part of its partnership with (RED), which supports the nonprofit Global Fund’s efforts to combat AIDS.
The Global Fund focuses on the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 70 percent of the HIV-positive in the world live, CBS News reported. The Fund works with testing, counseling, treatment, and prevention, especially preventing mothers from passing HIV to their unborn babies.
The red phones, which are exactly like the current iPhone 7 performance-wise, will be available in stores and online starting Friday. The phones will come with either 128GB or 256 GB of storage and will start at $749, according to Us Weekly.
Apple has been the largest corporate donor to the Global Fund with more than $130 million donated so far, (RED) CEO Deborah Dugan said, CBS reported. Apple already sells (RED) edition iPods, Beats headphones, and other products.
“Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release, Us Weekly reported. “The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands.”
Apple also announced updates to its iPad line, rolling out a new version of the 9.7-inch model to replace the iPad Air 2.
Twitter was pretty excited about Apple's new red iPhone.
