'Red Band Society': Reviewers Roll Their Eyes at New TV Teen Dramedy

A new Fox series, “Red Band Society,” will premiere this week and tackle the depth and drama inherent in terminal illness.

Premiering on Sept. 17, the show, produced by Stephen Spielberg’s Amblin Television, is “a provocative, unconventional and unique coming-of-age dramedy about a group of rule-bending friends and the adults who mentor them through the ups and downs of adolescence in Los Angeles' Ocean Park Hospital,” Fox said.

The Denver Post likened "Red Band Society" to the tear-jerker summer movie “The Fault in Our Stars,” pointing to “the angst in this story of ill youth confronting mortality (and sneaking beers and kisses) in a hospital, pushing the limits like teens anywhere.”

SF Gate wasn’t drawn into the show’s drama, labeling it as carrying “a heavy dose of schmaltz,” and saying that it would appeal to the teenagers who liked the summer’s sad movies.

“The show is for the kids who flocked to such teen weepers — tweepers? — as ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ and 'If I Stay' and are easy targets for superficial glamorization of mortality,” SF Gate wrote.

CinemaBlend deemed the show “sweet but a little shallow.”

“Pilots are notoriously unreliable gauges of where a series is headed,” CinemaBlend said. “Still, if 'Red Band Society' stays solid or improves over the next few weeks, no doubt it will find a nice niche as part of Fox’s schedule.”

“Red Band Society” stars Octavia Spencer, the Academy Award-winning actress from “The Help” and “Fruitvale Station,” as a nurse on the ward and Dave Annable from “Brothers and Sisters.”

The Denver Post sees hope for the show and its heart-rending but hopeful message.

“The narrative will play with time in a way that takes the story out of the confines of the hospital, exploring life before illness,” the Post wrote. “Overall, there’s optimism here, if not about recoveries then about humanity in general.”
