Raven-Symone does not want to be called "gay," "African-American," or any other label society might want to give the now-28-year-old former child star.
"I don't want to be labeled 'gay.' I want to be labeled 'a human who loves humans,'" the actress told Oprah Winfrey in an, at times, contentious interview on Saturday's episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" "I'm tired of being labeled . . . I'm an American. I'm not an African-American; I'm an American."
Raven-Symone's comments came as Oprah prodded her about her subtle "coming out" on Twitter in August 2013.
When Winfrey told Raven-Symone that she may face criticism for saying she is not African-American, the actress refused to back down from the remark.
"[I don't] know where my roots go to; I don't know how far back they go," Raven-Symone said. "I don't know what country in Africa I'm from. But I do know that my roots are in Louisiana. I'm an American, and that's a colorless person, because we're all people. I have lots of things running through my veins."
Reactions to the actress' comments were mixed on Twitter.
Raven-Symone is best known as the precocious kid from "The Cosby Show," and she later went on to star in her own Disney Channel original series, "That's So Raven."
"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Sundays on OWN at 9 p.m. EST.
