A first look at Rami Malek playing Freddie Mercury for the upcoming movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” shows a remarkable likeness between the “Mr. Robot” star and the legendary singer.
Bryan Singer is directing the film, which follows the band Queen from its inception in 1970 to the band’s famous live performance at Live Aid in 1985.
“When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror,” Malek said of the transformation, according to Entertainment Weekly, “it’s a very affirming moment.”
The movie is just beginning shooting and will be released Dec. 25, 2018, EW reported. It will use recordings of Mercury’s voice along with Malek’s voice or a Mercury sound-alike.
Malek said he’s spending a lot of time at Abbey Road studios to work on his singing, “if that should say anything to you. I’m not working on my acting,” EW reported.
Mercury died at age 45 in 1991 from complications of AIDS. Tuesday would have been the singer’s 71st birthday.
Twitter users swooned over the pic of Malek as Mercury.
