A student’s racist "promposal" has been condemned by a Florida school district and disciplinary action is being considered against the 18-year-old, who apologized for his actions.
A photo of the student holding a sign was posted to Snapchat, then Twitter on Sunday night, the Herald Tribune reported. The sign read, “If I was black, I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white, so I’m picking u 4 prom.”
“Neither the school district nor Riverview High School condones or supports the message conveyed in the post,” a statement on the district website read Tuesday.
Acting school principal Kathy Wilks also informed students and parents about the post, acknowledging that many were upset about its content and stating that the school didn’t “condone or support” the message, WFLA reported.
“Riverview High School has a wonderful student population and we know our school will use this incident as an opportunity to have productive conversations about respect for one another,” Wilks said.
While students are upset, they told WFLA they don’t want protests or riots, they just want people to think about what they say and recognize that things need to change.
The school is considering how to discipline the teen and has made guidance counselors available for students who need to talk about the post, WFLA reported.
Fox News reported the teen apologized on Snapchat for the sign, which he said was “a complete joke and it went too far.”
Twitter skewered the teen and his promposal.
