Rachael Ray faces a lawsuit filed against her dog food brand, Nutrish, claiming that it contains harmful chemical pesticides.
Bronx resident Markeith Parks filed the $5 million class action lawsuit saying that the food, which claims to be natural, contains glyphosate, a chemical found in common weed killers like Roundup, Fortune reported.
“These claims are false, deceptive, and misleading,” Parks said in a statement to The Wrap, adding that glyphosate is a “potent biocide and endocrine disruptor” and that the World Health Organization has declared it a “probable” human carcinogen.
Bobby Modi, vice president of Pet Food and Pet Snacks for JM Smucker, which makes the food, said the company stands behind the product. “As animal lovers and humans, it goes without saying that we do not add pesticides to our products as an ingredient. We plan to aggressively fight these claims,” Modi said, the Daily Mail reported.
The chemical was discovered in independent lab tests, according to the New York Daily News. Contrary to the WHO, the EPA says glyphosate has “low toxicity for humans.”
The suit speculates that the glyphosate might come from crops like peas, soy, corn, beets, and alfalfa that are sprayed with the chemical to produce a faster, more even harvest, the Daily News reported. The suit said Parks did not know the source of the chemical for certain.
Rachael Ray said in a statement that she believes in the safety and quality of the food and feeds Nutrish to her own dog at home. She is not directly targeted in the lawsuit, Fortune reported.
