Illinois residents apparently don't think much of Gov. Pat Quinn, according to a new poll showing the Democrat's job approval rating at just 26 percent.
The poll by the
Chicago Tribune and WGN TV found that dissatisfaction with Quinn extends across the state, from rural areas to the cities and across all age, income and ideological groups.
African-Americans and city voters had a better view of the governor's performance, but his support among those groups did not reach a majority, the Tribune reported Friday.
The opinions on Quinn's handling of state budget matters was stark; only 19 percent said they approved and 62 percent said they did not.
And among Democrats, only 4 in 10 of the survey respondents who identified themselves with the party said they support Quinn.
According to the Tribune, the survey "could provide added impetus" for other Democrats to challenge Quinn for the party's nomination in 2014.
The governor's job approval rating was the worst so far of his first two years in office and seems to indicate that things could get even worse if the state's economic situation doesn't improve.
Since taking office, Quinn has pushed through a tax increase while initiating a $1.6 billion cut in Medicaid. But the state is still behind in billions of dollars behind in backlogged bill payments.
