A
4-year-old girl in a princess costume rejected Prince William's kiss as he attempted to greet the child during an appearance Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland.
Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton were making their way down a receiving line of well-wishers at the Donald Dewer Leisure Centre when the Duke of Cambridge approached Shona Ritchie, who was all dressed up in a light blue gown and gold headband. The girl asked him for a kiss but got embarrassed as William leaned in and buried her face in her mother's shoulder.

"She's been dressed up like that since 6 a.m. today and we've been here waiting since nine," Karen Ritchie, Shona's mother, told the Daily Mail. "When she finally plucked up the courage to ask him [for a kiss], she got really shy and pulled away. As he leaned in to kiss her on the forehead she pulled away and got really shy."
Prince William took the rejection in stride.
"Next time, Shona. Next time," William said, rubbing the little girl's back. "It always happens. All girls do that now."
Shona Ritchie also refused to give the 30-year-old prince a flower, as she was saving it to give to his wife.
"Is that for me?" he asked her. "Is that for Kate? Yeah, you're going to give it for her."
When Middleton, 31, made her way down the line, Ritchie happily gave her the gift.
"[Kate] said Shona looked very pretty and asked her if she had picked the flower from her garden," Karen Ritchie told the Daily Mail. "But Shona told her she got it from my vase in the house and she thought that was very funny."
William and Middleton are expecting their first child, due to be born in July.
