Prince's 2007 Super Bowl halftime show in the rain is emerging as a favorite memory about the iconic singer who died unexpectedly Thursday at the age of 57.
The "Purple Rain" entertainer performed for Super Bowl XLI between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears at Miami's Sun Life Stadium on Feb. 7, 2007. (The NFL has restricted viewing of the halftime show to
this link.)
"Everybody knew Prince would make this a freakfest for the ages," said
Rolling Stone magazine. "But he exceeded all expectations, in the middle of a Miami thunderstorm. A Foo Fighters cover? 'We Will Rock You' into 'Let's Go Crazy?' 'All Along the Watchtower?' An epic guitar-hero jam on 'Purple Rain?' … Total mastery. Total cool."
Super Bowl halftime show production designer Bruce Rodgers remembered the morning of the show and finding out the rare rain prediction for the game, said
Entertainment Weekly.
"Prince was like, 'Can you make it rain harder?'" Rodgers said.
But the artist played like it hardly bothered him, said the
Daily Beast, as he
performed hits from Bob Dylan and Credence Clearwater Revival as well as his own hits.
"Somebody take my picture, with all this rain," Prince ad-libbed at one point during the wet performance.
The NFL remembered the performance in a Twitter post as others sent messages of condolences.
