A Port Authority Bus Terminal explosion on Monday morning left several people injured after a device was detonated inside a tunnel connecting the busy transportation hub with subways and trains, the New York Post reported.
Police, firefighters and the bomb squad swarmed the scene between Eight and Ninth avenues and although there was no immediate word on what caused the explosion, one person was in custody.
An unidentified law enforcement source told CBS News that a pipe bomb may have gone off in the tunnels and authorities were investigating the possibility of a suicide bombing.
CBS News said the suspect may have been carrying the bomb when it went off prematurely but his injuries were not considered to be life threatening.
People almost immediately began posting images and updates on social media.
One person reported hearing a loud noise and a stampeded of people running before being evacuated.
Posting under the name @The_Last_View, on Twitter, the witness also claimed to have seen police arrest the suspect.
Another person had just stepped off a bus and was near the scene when the explosion occurred. Posting to Twitter under the name @MagikalScorpio, the person described a “loud pop and then tons of people running to get to safety.”
