Car maker Lamborghini presented Pope Francis with a special edition Lamborghini Huracan painted to complement the papal flag Wednesday.
The pope blessed the car and signed it when he accepted the gift, but plans to auction it off through Sotheby’s and donate the proceeds to three of his favorite charities.
Beneficiaries of the auction proceeds include a fund to rebuild homes and churches destroyed by ISIS near Mosul before they were chased out of Iraq, one that helps sex trafficking victims, and one that provides medical help to people in Africa, The Telegraph reported.
Pope Francis typically prefers more modest means of transportation like Fords and Fiats when he travels. He sometimes uses the popemobile, a specially designed vehicle with a raised, bulletproof glass seat where he can be seen during appearances.
Previous vehicles blessed by the pope have sold for far greater than their usual value. In 2014, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle he blessed sold for $284,000, more than 10 times its usual price. A motorcycle jacket the pope signed sold for almost $68,000. Even an iPad Pope Francis once owned brought in $30,500.
Some on Twitter thought the Lamborghini would be protected from accidents, while others wished the pope would drive it before he sells it.
