Pope Francis said the crucifix is not a fashion accessory to be “abused” by fashionistas but instead is a symbol that should serve as a reminder of faith and devotion to Christians.

“The crucifix is not an ornamental object or a clothing accessory which is sometimes abused,” the 81-year-old said during a speech at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican after a Sunday Angelus service, The Independent reported.

“The image of Jesus crucified reveals the mystery of the death of the Son as the supreme act of love, the source of life and salvation for humanity of all times.”

The cross has become a popular item in the fashion world, with many A-listers including Katy Perry, Rita Ora and Madonna, as well as fashion bloggers flaunting the symbol as neck and ear pieces.

Several years ago, Archbishop Justin Welby slammed celebrities for the very same reason, insisting that people using the crucifix as a fashion symbol were hanging “tiny golden gallows” and “electric chair” around their necks, The Daily Star reported.

Once again, the controversial topic as emerged.

“The image of Jesus crucified reveals the mystery of the death of the Son as the supreme act of love, the source of life and salvation for humanity of all times,” Pope Francis said, per Breitbart, adding that through these wounds humanity was healed.

“How do I look at the crucifix? Like a work of art, to see whether it is beautiful or not? Or do I look inside, entering the wounds of Jesus even to his heart? Do I look at the mystery of God brought low to the point of death, like a slave, like a criminal?”

When it comes to tattoos however, Pope Francis is more lenient.

“Don’t be afraid of tattoos,” he told a group of young students in Rome on Monday, according to The Independent.

“Of course, there can be exaggerations, but a tattoo is a sign of belonging.”
