Polygamists are trying to halt gay marriages in Mississippi with a federal lawsuit arguing that legalizing same-sex marriage is in contravention of the Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government from establishing a religion.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, the lawsuit stated that "this case concerns only what states may do under the Constitution in determining how the Constitution permits the states to legally define marriage and which types of marriages the states can legally recognize."

The legal document further claimed that "the plaintiffs are not bigots for respectfully asking that this court uphold the Constitution. This case is not based on emotion but on what the Constitution allows. This is a war for the viability of our Constitutional Republic itself."

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District against Pontotoc Circuit Clerk Melinda Nowicki, Attorney General Jim Hood and Gov. Phil Bryant.

The Clarion-Ledger noted that one of the four plaintiffs, Chris Sevier, describes himself as a "machinist," or someone wanting to marry a machine.

He explained that same-sex marriage is a religion, claiming that "gay marriage was not secular," but controversial.

"It’s questionably real," he said according to WJTV, adding that it was not secular, just like other forms of perspective marriage such as polygamy, and zoophilia, and machinism.

"All forms of parody marriage are equally part of the religion of secular humanism."

WJTV noted how Sevier became involved with the lawsuit after extensive efforts to have his marriage with a computer recognized by the Pontotoc County Circuit Clerk.
