Rep. Poe to Newsmax: Small Business Will Suffer from Obamacare

By    |   Thursday, 28 June 2012 02:31 PM EDT

One of the biggest impacts of Obamacare, now that the Supreme Court has ruled it constitutional, will be on small business, Rep. Ted Poe said Thursday.

Because the law requires businesses with more than 50 employees to offer health insurance, many small businesses are making sure they stay below that 50-employee threshold, Poe, a Texas Republican, told Newsmax.TV.

Forty-eight percent of businesses in the United states are not hiring more than 50 people,” he said, “and that’s not helping the economy. Some are even doing layoffs to get under 50 (employees). They can’t afford to stay in business unless they stay below the ‘magic number’ of 50.”

The question isn’t whether the Affordable Care Act is a good idea or not, Poe said. Americans just can’t afford it. “Taxes are going to go up on everybody in this country because of this.”

“The main problem,” Poe said, “is that the Supreme Court has authorized the government, of all things, to be in charge of our health. That’s got to be in the hands of individuals and their doctors.”

When Congress returns next week, it will again do its “due diligence” and repeal the act, Poe predicted, and he hopes the Senate will do the same.

“If not, he said, “we’ll do it after the election.”
