Pizza rat has returned – or a pizza rat copycat – to the New York City subways, with one social media user posting a 37 second video of the rat dragging a full, single slice of cheese pizza at a Manhattan train station, the New York Post reported.
The video was posted by Michael Courant on Instagram and Twitter, proclaiming in the caption, "I just saw pizza rat."
The video is reminiscent of the viral 2015 video of a rat pulling a pizza slice down a train staircase at the East Village's First Avenue station on the L line, the New York Post reported.
"Mr. Pizza Rat dragged the pizza very hard and quickly, clearly symbolizing that the winter was tough and that spring came and went as fast as an available apartment with decent rent," wrote Chris Crowley, of GrubStreet.com, with a humorous take on the new "pizza rat" video.
"Now that the pizza rat has declared the start of the hot days, it will return to its subterranean abode where it will have all the pizza and garlic knots it desires. It will only emerge again months later to tell New Yorkers that the leaves are turning and it is time to take part in the annual picking of the apples," Crowley continued.
Social media users have been entertained by videos of rats carting off human food, such as "pretzel rat" in 2016, and "avocado rat" in 2017, according to the Post.
"Churro rats" made the big time in a viral video, too, in 2017 as they fought over the treat in a New York subway that was also caught on video, Mashable reported then.
"As we can see in the video above, two rough NYC rodents found themselves a tasty fried snack. And honestly, who wouldn't want a churro on the subway," Mashable writer Christine Wang said then. "But the challenge is — there are two rats and only one churro."
