Pizza Hut’s latest concoction of a pepperoni pizza with small hot dogs tucked into the crust is going viral online, labeled as everything from “bizarre” to a “weird mistake.”
Over the last few years, the pizza chain has introduced specialty crusts with flavorings like garlic, butter, cheese, and even the hot sauce sriracha. But the new hot dog crust announced by Pizza Hut on Twitter has incited more attention than just about anything else Pizza Hut has done in recent years,
although Entrepreneur magazine reported the company has been selling hot dog pizza internationally for about eight years.
The hot dog pizza will be available in the U.S. on June 18, but the reaction online was certainly divided.
On the "Today" show's Facebook post about the pizza, many were horrified at the idea of combining hot dogs and pizza.
“Eww. And an insult to all the fine pizza makers out there. This new "pizza" will not bring me back to Pizza Hut,” one person wrote.
But another person, who has kids, saw the silver lining: “Clever idea. How many times do we order pizza and kids take a bite or two and leave the rest on the plate. I know the kids will love the pizza dough wrapped hot dogs dipped in cheese.”
