Pittsburgh Police Pride Decals Unveiled for Pride Month in June

The Pittsburgh Police Department unveiled pride decals on Tuesday that were added to one of their vehicles in honor of Pride Month, which is in June.

The rainbow decals were showcased at a department news conference Tuesday morning, KDKA reported. The $350 cost of the decals, which support the LGBTQIA+ community, was paid by the PBP Command Staff and taxpayer money was not used, the department noted.

"This is part of our ongoing community outreach efforts," chief of staff Eric Holmes said, KDKA reported. "This supports our work with the National Initiative and is in line with the task force Report on 21st Century Policing. Many police agencies around the country show their support this way."

The patrol car can be seen in Downtown and Market Square through June, KDKA reported.

"This is part of our commitment to being an inclusive police department," police chief Scott Schubert said, WTAE reported. "As far as our philosophy of community policing, this is about building bridges and being there for everyone."

Installing the decals got some pushback last year from the police union, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Several police cars displayed decals last year to support events including Police Memorial Week, Pittsburgh Pride, Black History Month, and others.

Fraternal Order of Police Fort Pitt Lodge No. 1 president Robert Swartzwelder expressed concern over the action at the time, saying he feared hate groups might lobby to be represented, the Post-Gazette reported. Police brass including Commander Eric Holmes, the bureau's LGBTQ liaison, decided to go forward with the decals anyway.

"The [mayor's LGBTQIA+] Advisory Council appreciates the ongoing support that Pittsburgh Police continue to give to our community," council chairwoman Shanea Leonard said, the Post-Gazette reported.
