This season's Super Bowl national anthem is going Pink.
The NFL announced Monday pop star Pink will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" ahead of the championship game Feb. 4 in Minneapolis.
Pink and halftime performer Justin Timberlake both hit the bigtime in 2000 and both have produced a string of pop hits from then until the present.
Others singers have performed the national anthem in recent years include Luke Bryan, Lady Gaga, and Idina Menzel.
Dan Hanzus at NFL.com noted the positive reception of Lady Gaga’s national anthem performance in Super Bowl 50 helped her land the halftime gig for 51.
“So perhaps we should start looking at these assignments as something of an audition in front of 111 million people,” Hanzus remarked. “That doesn’t sound stressful at all.”
It remains to be seen whether any players on either one of the eventual Super Bowl teams will take a knee or refuse to stand for the national anthem this year after hundreds of players did so during one or more regular season games.
Ratings were down an average of nearly 10 percent during the 2017 season; they dropped about 8 percent during the 2016 season, ESPN reported. Despite the drop, 20 of the 30 highest rated shows in 2017 were football games.
There was quite a bit of support for the Pink's national anthem assignment, although some were not in favor of it.
