Phoenix Storms Flood Roads, Cut Power and Delay Flights

By    |   Monday, 29 September 2014 06:22 AM EDT

Powerful thunderstorms brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Phoenix region over the weekend – flooding roads, delaying flights and leaving thousands without power.

Area Residents were greeted Sunday morning by toppled trees and debris-littered streets.

The Salt River Project utility said 800 people are still without electricity – down from 51,000.

The Arizona Public Service said 11,000 customers were without power, but progress was expected in the next few hours.

No injuries were reported, but authorities conducted two water rescues Saturday involving stranded hikers.

The National Weather Service said Phoenix received a record 1.6 inches of rain with some spots getting more than 2 inches.

Other southwest storms caused flooding in Nevada, but authorities say the damage wasn't as bad as earlier in the month.
