Phillip Hughes, the Australian cricket sensation who died last week after being hit in the ear by a ball, was laid to rest Wednesday in a memorial that sparked an international outpouring of grief and was broadcast live in his homeland.

He was 25.

"In his short time he walked as a child of the light, not in an ostentatious way but in a natural, unassuming and passionate way," Father Michael Alcock said during the funeral, The Associated Press reported.

Commemoration ceremonies, including one held by the Vatican's cricket team in Rome, were also held elsewhere, the AP said.

Australia captain Michael Clarke, a close friend of Hughes', served as a pallbearer and speaker at the funeral.

"Phillip's spirit, which is now part of our game forever, will act as a custodian of the sport we all love. We must listen to it. We must cherish it. We must learn from it. We must dig in and get through to tea. And we must play on," Clarke said in his emotional eulogy, which was posted online.

Hughes scored 63 runs the day he died. His scorecard was amended to "forever 63 not out," and 63 became a theme for his memorial, The Huffington Post reported.

The funeral, held in Hughes' hometown of Macksville, Australia, drew about 1,000 and closed to Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," The Independent reported.

Twitter users expressed their grief over Hughes' death.
