A Phillies fan made the catch of a lifetime when a driving foul ball came his way on Sunday, and he did it all with his 7-month-old baby strapped to his chest.
"It hurt — I mean my hand is a little sore," Mike Capko, who was at the game celebrating Mother's Day with wife Alyssa and son Kolton,
told ABC affiliate WPVI-TV in a follow-up interview. "He crushed that ball but something like that you have a natural reaction and it worked out great."
"No Mother's Day will ever top the first Mother's Day we've had," said Alyssa. "I've never caught a foul ball in all the years I've been going to Phillies games and I said 'this is the first time we're going to catch a foul ball and it's going to hit my son right in the head.'"
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro reportedly saw the catch, and joked about signing Capko, but the 30-year-old said he's never played baseball. He did play soccer and hockey when he was younger though.
The right-handed Capko said the snag —which was made with his left — was pure instinct, and that he was well aware they'd have to keep an eye out for foul balls sitting where they were.
"We're right behind home plate here; we have to pay attention, no play is off,"
Capko told MLB.com just minutes after making the catch. "It paid off. I got my boy's first foul ball here. It was already a special day for a first Mother's Day and his first game, but now we'll never forget it."
