Twelve people were injured and at least two more were trapped in the rubble after a four-story building collapsed in Center City Philadelphia on Wednesday, the city's fire chief said.

Mayor Michael Nutter said in a news conference that all 12 injured were taken to the hospital and were conscious and talking.

The collapse occurred on the corner of 22nd and Market streets around 10:45 a.m. The building was connected to a Salvation Army Thrift Store and reportedly brought down part of the shop when it fell.

FOX 29 reported a structure adjacent to the thrift shop was under construction. It's not yet clear why the four-story building collapsed.

Initial reports indicated that eight to 10 people may be trapped, but authorities said they don't know for sure how many people were inside at the time of the collapse.

Philadelphia police are asking the public to steer clear of the area.
