Americans love their pets and are not afraid to spend a lot of money on them. Each year, pet owners across the United States spend billions on their furry friends, which is far more than any other country, and it is easy to see why. A 2015 poll found that 95% of Americans saw their pets as part of the family, according to The Economist.
So, how much are pet owners spending on their animals?
In 2019, Americans spent more than $52 billion on their pets, which is up from $34 billion in 2009. The bulk of that went to food, but pet owners did not think twice about splurging on pet supplies. Over $18 billion was spent on accessories, which range from bare essentials to designer clothing. In comparison, Britain spent $93 per person in 2019, while France spent $87. On the opposite end of the spectrum, countries like China, South Africa, and Singapore spent less than $50 per person.
