Republican New York Rep. Peter King supports President Donald Trump’s deal with Democrats to extend current spending and increase the debt limit until December.
The provisions will be added to an $8 billion Hurricane Harvey relief bill that was passed Wednesday in the House and will be voted on in the Senate as early as Friday.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced the legislation Wednesday night and also moved to increase disaster funding to $15.25 billion to address possible damage from Hurricane Irma, which is expected to make landfall in the U.S. over the next few days.
Some Republicans in Congress had pushed for an 18-month debt relief extension, but Trump chose to compromise with Democrats as a way to come together in a time of national crisis caused by the widespread damage and flooding of Harvey.
King tweeted a series of messages in support of Trump’s decision, saying the president was “like Reagan” in his deal-making and that a “clean bill” was needed to raise the debt limit.
