Paul Revere Time Capsule Contents Removed, Put on Display in Boston

By    |   Tuesday, 06 January 2015 07:27 PM EST

A time capsule believed placed by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams was opened in Boston on Tuesday.

It took more than four hours to loosen the screws atop the capsule.

"They said it was hermetically sealed, and I think they really meant it," said Pam Hatchfield, head of objects conservation at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, according to CNN.

Items inside included newspapers and coins.

The items were planned to be on display at the museum.

The capsule is thought to have been placed during construction of the state capitol building in 1795, when Samuel Adams was governor. It was unearthed in 1855 during renovations to the building.

The museum tweeted during the event on Tuesday, including the unveiling of documents and a silver plaque inscribed by Paul Revere.

Other tweets described the tools Hatchfield used to extract the items, including a porcupine quill and her grandfather’s dental tool.

Twitter users watched the event unfold.
