Paul McCartney Makes Surprise Campus Appearance, Then Rocks Jacksonville

Paul McCartney made a surprise visit to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, for a public chat with two-term U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins on Friday, just a day before rocking out in Jacksonville to a sold-out crowd.

"Every time I approach a song, there's no rules. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the words — and if you're lucky, it all comes together," McCartney said in response to a question about his songwriting process, Rolling Stone reported.

"I tell students all the time, 'Look, I don't know how to do this,'" he said earnestly.

McCartney's surprise appearance was announced the morning of the event, and, predictably, drew so much interest that the school implemented a lottery system to give out tickets.

The lucky winners were not only treated to insider tales of the early Beatles, but also got to hear a stripped-down performance of "Blackbird." All told, a few hundred students piled into the Knowles Memorial Chapel to view the performance.

When Collins, a senior distinguished fellow at the Winter Park Institute, asked McCartney for his opinion of the countless covers of his songs, the music veteran seemed delighted.

"If someone on the street corner is reading one of your poems," he asked Collins, "is it going to bother you?"

He also recalled humbly a time when he read his own poetry aloud to a group of scholars in New York City.

"It was pretty nerve-wracking," he said. "I had to respect the silence as a great thing."

The next evening, The Florida Times-Union reported that McCartney played an impressive set that spanned over 30 songs and more than two hours.

"How a 72-year-old guy's voice can hold up like that is anybody's guess. He mentioned during the show that he was just coming off a break spent in Florida; perhaps he found Ponce de Leon's mythical Fountain of Youth during his vacation. The guy never even broke a sweat or sounded out of breath," wrote the paper's concert critic.
