Julia Law, a 26-year-old
paralegal, was found dead face down in a bathtub by a maintenance worker at the home of her boss/boyfriend, prominent criminal lawyer A. Charles Peruto Jr.
Peruto, 58, who is well known in Philadelphia for his mob clientele, is renowned for his courtroom theatrics. He was in New Jersey at the time of Law’s death, overseeing construction of a new home.

Law, who had been given a key to Peruto’s condo, apparently decided to take a bath Saturday morning. Officials found water in her lungs, which would be consistent with drowning, and there were no signs of a struggle, strangulation, or drugs.
Peruto and Law had dated for about six weeks. Peruto called Law an “angel” who had touched his life with love. He has been questioned by police but is not considered a suspect.
Neighbors in the Center City area are withholding judgment.
“This is not a crime, it’s a tragedy,” Pamela McCarthy, a neighbor of Peruto’s, said. “Until someone tells me otherwise, there’s no proof of foul play or crime. It could be a million things.”
