Palindrome Week: Every Date Reads the Same Backward and Forward

By    |   Monday, 14 April 2014 06:30 PM EDT

This week is Palindrome week, when each date reads the same backward as it does forward.

Palindrome Week started on 4/12/14 and ends on 4/19/14, and those dates and the ones in between read the same no matter which direction you start from.

It's worth noting that it's only Palindrome Week in the United States and other countries that format their dates with the month first — many list it by the date first, then the month and year.

According to www.palindromelist.net, the word “palindrome” was coined from the Greek roots palin (“again”) and dromos (“way, direction”) by the English writer Ben Jonson in the 17th century and is an example of constrained writing. It is “a word, phrase, number, or other sequence of symbols or elements, whose meaning may be interpreted the same way in either forward or reverse direction."

Notable examples of palindromes would be words like “civic,” “kayak,” “madam,” and “radar.”

Twitter on board with Palindrome Week, although some lamented that people would be tweeting about it every day this week.
