Pakistan Lioness' 5 Cubs at Once a Rare Event

A lioness kept as a pet in Pakistan gave birth to five cubs, a rare large litter, and each cub is eating 20 pounds of meat every day.

Malik Fazal Abbas adopted 4-year-old Rani, which means a Hindu Queen, when the lioness was just 2 months old, The Associated Press reported. He bred her with another pet lion male lion at his Multan, Pakistan, home. He has state licenses to keep both animals.

The cubs are now 9 months old, and Abbas told the AP keeping the wild animals is not “a hobby easy to afford.” The adult lions eat about 44 pounds of meat every day.

Abbas, who is a cotton and mango farmer, said he had dreamed of having pet lions since he was a child, and told the AP that although his family was uneasy around them at first, they are now comfortable. It’s especially important to follow safety measures.

Many people are fascinated with any of the big cats, and it’s not uncommon to take the wild animals in as pets. Just last week, The Telegraph reported on a family living in a Gaza refugee camp in the Palestinian territory that bought two lion cubs from a failing zoo.

The two cubs live in the home of Saadi Jamal, a Palestinian Authority security employee, who told the Telegraph that the cubs live among his four children and often play with other children in the camp. As the cubs get older, he plans to make money off of them by taking them to parks, resorts, and restaurants.

Online, the lion cubs and even their parents made lots of people say "aww."
