Ozzy Osbourne is sharing memories of what it was like to be part of the rock band Black Sabbath. The 71-year-old fronted the band for several years. During that time, they drew widespread controversy and were even accused of being conjurers of magic. Osbourne elaborated upon receiving the gong at the 23rd GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2020 on Thursday.
"He went to see The Exorcist, people thought we were a Black Magic f---ing spooky band," he said during the virtual ceremony, per Daily Mail. "We sung a few things about that, environmental issues, or everything that was going on to this day. I mean so it's kind of funny because people start doing songs about the pandemic, we were doing that 50 years ago."
Speaking about his lyrics, Osbourne pointed out that he was writing about topics that other bands are only addressing now, including pandemics.
"Everyone sung about boy meets girl and I wanted to do something that interests me, how Vietnam was going, the fear of nuclear holocaust," he said. "That blew my mind I thought 'what is going with this world.'"
Osbourne further spoke of what it was like starting out with Black Sabbath.
"You never sing the same line the same twice. Black Sabbath wasn't a band created by some big mogul, we were four guys who thought 'let's have a go' and we had a dream and it came true beyond our wildest expectations," he said. "When you're in the eye of the storm you don't realize you're screwed or about it, all I was trying to do was survive."
In a recent interview with GQ, Osbourne also addressed the infamous incident during which he bit the head off a dove in 1981. Alcohol was what spurred him on.
"That was just a thing at the record company where I was drunk at 7am in the morning,” he said. "Sharon said, ‘I want you to go into that office and throw these doves in the air.' So I threw one and then bit the head off the other one. It freaked everybody out. They banned me from the building after that. They nearly dropped me too!"
