Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is in prison in South Africa for killing his girlfriend in 2013, was reportedly injured in a scuffle with another inmate over phone use.
Department of Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said Pistorius was just bruised rather than being seriously injured, and the prison is conducting an internal investigation of the incident.
“The outcome of the investigation would determine if any remedial action would be undertaken against any of the inmates involved,” Nxumalo said, ABC News reported, noting that punishment could be a long time coming while the investigation takes place.
Pistorius, 31, was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter in July 2016, but his six-year sentence more than doubled last month.
The sprinter claimed he shot Reeva Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door thinking she was a burglar in the early morning hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013. He was found guilty of murder in 2015.
In November, the appeals court imposed on Pistorius the minimum sentence for murder in South Africa: 15 years minus time already served.
Prison officials say they will take appropriate action against the parties at fault once their investigation is complete, Nxumalo said, adding that assaults against fellow inmates are not allowed, ABC News reported.
The double amputee competed in the Paralympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics, earning the nicknames “Bladeunner” and the “Fastest Man on No Legs.”
