The spirit of the Oregon Trail computer game will be resurrected in tandem with Crystal Pepsi this summer, the soft drink company said this week.
The Crystal Pepsi Trail, a takeoff on the The Oregon Trail game, will be released online July 7 on www.crystalpepsi.net,
Pepsi announced. The crystal clear cola will itself be sold for a limited time starting July 11 in Canada and Aug. 8 in the United States, the company stated further.
"We've always had a special place in our heart for Crystal Pepsi, and there has been a huge groundswell of support to bring it back," said Stacy Taffet, senior director of marketing for Pepsi.
"What better way to celebrate this iconic 90s cola than to introduce a new take on one of the most beloved games of the decade. Totally rad," Taffet added.
E.J. Schultz, a writer with Ad Age, reported that Pepsi's version of the Oregon Trail is meant to connect with drinkers who likely played the computer game in the 1990s, with the task of collecting "as many 90s items along the trail as you can with your dawgs."
"The soda briefly came back last year, but only via an online sweepstakes that lasted less than two days in December," Schultz wrote. "This time, PepsiCo is making a bigger bet that consumers will scoop up the retro soda at stores across the country. Crystal Pepsi will be available for eight weeks."
Ad Age wrote that Pepsi plans to promote Crystal Pepsi through "extensive paid media on digital channels" instead of television ads.
USA Today wrote that in the 1990 version of The Oregon Trail, players were guided through trials and tests while trying to make it across the American frontier. The game was often used in schools to teach geography and history.
Crystal Pepsi and The Oregon Trail have already generated significant excitement on social media.
