Orbitz, United Suing 22-Year-Old Over His Cheap-Airfare Website

United Airlines and Orbitz are suing 22-year-old New York City man Aktarer Zaman, who founded the website Skiplagged.com to help people buy cheap plane tickets.

Skiplagged.com uses “hidden city” ticketing, in which a traveler buys a one-way airline ticket that has a layover in their desired city and then doesn’t take the final leg, staying instead at the layover city.

The lawsuit calls Skiplagged “unfair competition” and seeks to recoup $75,000 in lost revenue.

A Bangladesh-born computer science graduate, Zaman said he hasn’t made any money from his website, CNNMoney reported. He works at a technology startup and developed Skiplagged.com as a side project.

Hidden city ticketing causes logistical and public safety concerns for airlines, affecting fuel load computations and the ability to count passengers, Bloomberg reported.

“Purchasing a ticket to a point beyond the actual destination and getting off the aircraft at the connecting point is unethical,” according to the letter by American Airlines. “It is tantamount to switching price tags to obtain a lower price on goods sold at department stores.”

Zaman has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his legal defense, and had raised almost $24,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

“Everything Skiplagged has done and continues to do is legal, but the only way to effectively prove this is with lawyers,” the GoFundMe page says.

Twitter users had mixed reactions.
