Orange Beach Sharks Gone, but Is It Safe To Go Back in the Water?

By    |   Wednesday, 11 June 2014 07:03 AM EDT

The Orange Beach sharks that closed the Alabama Point shores this week seem to have fled, meaning the double red flag warnings in effect since Sunday have been lifted, but swimmers are being warned that the predators may always be around.

Swimmers were allowed back in the Gulf of Mexico off Orange Beach Tuesday, two days after a news helicopter spotted between 100 and 150 sharks circling off the coast.

The Orange Beach Fire Department made the announcement about the reopening of the beaches Tuesday on Facebook.

"Remember, sharks live in the Gulf, but the large number in the localized area of the jetties since yesterday has decreased significantly," the posting read.

"This was the first time we've had to close the waters for this long because of sharks," Aquatics and Beach Safety Director Melvin Sheperd told AL.com. "Hopefully it will be the last time, but you never know."

Sheperd said he believes the sharks were drawn to the Alabama Point waters because of all the dead fish.

"Hopefully, once people stop throwing their fish carcasses into the water, [sharks] may not be swimming in such numbers that close to the beach," he said in a statement earlier this week.
