Oprah Winfrey announced on Twitter on Tuesday that she lost 26 pounds, and Weight Watchers stock soared 20 percent afterward, according to
Bloomberg Business.
"I lost 26 pounds, and I have eaten bread every single day," Winfrey said in a video posted on Twitter, as she sang the benefits of Weight Watchers.
The media mogul announced last October that she bought a 10 percent share in Weight Watchers with options to gain another five percent, as well as joining Weight Watchers board, reported
USA Today.
Bloomberg reported that Weight Watchers shares climbed $2.17 to $13.29 after Winfrey released the video. The weight loss company also saw its stocks rise when Winfrey announced on the Ellen DeGeneres show in October that she lost 15 pounds.
CNN Money said the tweet rose the market value of the company by nearly $150 million, or roughly $5.6 million for each pound Winfrey has lost.
The
Washington Post said Weight Watchers stock was at $6.79 when Winfrey became financially involved with the company, down about $80 at its peak in 2011. The Post said the company now competes with fitness apps and various food fads as the culture has shied away from more traditional diets.
Bloomberg said Winfrey started to appear in Weight Watcher endorsements in December, with some investors believing that the 61-year-old entertainment powerhouse could turn around the company.
"This is the joy for me," Winfrey said in Tuesday's video. "I don't deny myself bread. I have bread every day."
Winfrey's Twitter video received a positive response on social media.
