Jeremy Boyle, an Ole Miss student beaten by five fellow students and left with a concussion, broken teeth, a ruptured eardrum, and a lung contusion, saw his attackers arrested last week, and now the suspects' smiling mug shots are causing even more controversy.
According to student newspaper The Daily Mississippian, the University Police Department arrested all five suspects on Friday after learning of the beating at the Sigma Pi fraternity house that took place Oct. 6 around 4 a.m. Boyle, a junior accounting major, is a member of the fraternity.
"Tucker Cole Steil, a general studies major and Pi Kappa Alpha, was arrested on a felony-level charge of assault," the paper noted of the 18-year-old. He posted $10,000 bail on Monday, and was released from the Lafayette County jail.
Reporting on the misdemeanor charges, it wrote, "James Declan Basile, a business student, was arrested on charges of assault, hazing, and larceny. Christian Guy and Kyle Hughes, business majors, were arrested on charges of larceny. Austin Rice, engineering major, was arrested on charges of larceny as well."
The police report about the incident was heavily redacted, and did not make clear what was suspected of being robbed from Boyle.
Boyle's father, Brian, said he's upset the suspects are still on campus.
"What we're finding is the leniency we've had so far on these assailants," he said. "That's the biggest problem. They had gone through the university's justice system and were, for all intents and purposes, slapped on the wrist. In the meantime, you've got accused felons walking around the campus."
The mug shots released by the police department show four of the suspects smiling, a fact that has upset many on campus,
reported The Times-Picayune. Steil was not smiling in his mugshot.
